Freelance Community Engagement Editor for Southern New Mexico Journalism Collaborative

The New Mexico Local News Fund is launching a new journalism collaborative in southern New Mexico and is seeking a bilingual, freelance community engagement editor to join the project.

The Southern New Mexico Journalism Collaborative’s first project brings together local news organizations to carry out important reporting on the topic of Covid recovery in society. A key aspect of the project is to involve community groups, community members, policy makers, experts, and journalists in an in-depth way. The project especially seeks to include voices and perspectives of Spanish-speaking residents, who’ve often been left out of local news.

The Collaborative will employ a solutions-oriented approach to reporting.

The community engagement editor would work with a project coordinator, reporter, editor, newsrooms, and community members to help build relationships in both English- and Spanish-speaking communities. This role may include helping coordinate events, social media promotion, calling contacts and sources, helping to gather input and feedback on reporting topics, promotion of the Collaborative’s news stories, and running a text messaging news line in Spanish.

This is a part-time position with an expected workload of 15-20 hours per week. Pay rate is negotiable, based upon experience level.

What’s needed for this role:

  • An understanding of southern New Mexico and its communities
  • Comfortable writing and speaking proficiently in both English and Spanish
  • Familiarity with newsroom processes and journalism is ideal
  • Experience or education in community outreach, community engagement, community liaison work, political science, social media marketing, or journalism
  • Interest in working with news organizations on an important reporting topic
  • Ability to use social media, carry out messaging campaigns (such as to invite people to virtual meetings), or knowledge of working with marketers to carry out such campaigns
  • Strong interest in engaging communities, such as the Spanish-speaking community, who’ve often been left out of the local news conversation
  • Able to work with diverse groups of people with different needs and perspectives
  • Familiarity with solutions-oriented journalism or willingness to learn about it
  • Ideally living in southern New Mexico, or willing to relocate
