About NMLNF:

The New Mexico Local News Fund launched in late 2018 with an ambitious mission to support the ecosystem for local news across our state. We work with both journalists and community leaders to support existing local news outlets and address gaps in local news coverage across our state. NMLNF currently runs several programs aimed at strengthening the local news ecosystem and supporting journalists. Increasing diversity in the journalism community is a core value of our organization. We also invite community members to help shape our work by serving on our Advisory Committee, responding to surveys or participating in focus groups and community conversations. NMLNF is a fiscally sponsored project of the Santa Fe Community Foundation.

The Northern New Mexico Coordinator will:

  • Map the local news ecosystem in northern New Mexico and write a report that will be published on the NMLNF website
  • Maintain relationships with newsrooms (informing them about fellowship opportunities, grants, networking, etc.)
  • Build relationships with journalists and community leaders
  • Manage programs and grants, which may involve checking in with grantees and writing reports for funders and stakeholders across the state
  • Provide updates  on local activities for the Local News Fund newsletter and social media.
  • Help identify opportunities for investment and innovation that would address the news and information needs of people in Northern New Mexico.
  • Help identify new opportunities for collaboration, emerging responses to local news deserts, and other improvements to the local news ecosystem.

Skills & Experience:

  • Experience working in local journalism, particularly in New Mexico, is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to journalism, especially local news
  • Deep knowledge about the current challenges facing local news organizations in New Mexico and/or across the United States
  • Great communication and networking skills to galvanize local newsrooms to action
  • Experience managing multiple projects and/or grants
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to identify new opportunities and strategies that help serve the news and information needs of communities in northern counties

This job is remote, but requires you to live in New Mexico.

The program assistant will:

  • Work closely with New Mexico Local News Fund directors, assisting them with contracts, budgets, communications, newsletter, website copy and social media
  • Update and maintain a database of newsrooms around the state
  • As needed provide assistance to Local News Fund Co-Director Rashad Mahmood’s John S. Knight Fellowship projects
  • Attend weekly staff meetings when available

Skills & Experience:

  • Experience managing contracts and administrative duties, strongly preferred
  • Communications/social media experience including understanding analytics and scheduling posts
  • Experience in local journalism or an appreciation of the value of local news for society and democracy
  • Experience with spreadsheet programs such as Excel
