Become a Documenter
Documenters are community members—citizens, neighbors, creators, civic actors—who reflect the rich diversity and intergenerational stories of the places they call home. The Documenters network, created by City Bureau, trains and pays residents to attend and take notes at public meetings, strengthening transparency and expanding access to local government information.
City Bureau has recruited, trained, and paid Documenters in communities across the country, including Akron, Atlanta, Atlantic County, Bismarck, Cape May County, Centre County, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbia Gorge, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Fort Worth, Fresno, Gary, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Nebraska Panhandle, Newark, New Brunswick, Omaha, Philadelphia, San Diego, Spokane, Tulsa, and Wichita.
Now, we’re bringing this model to Southern New Mexico—and we’re building our cohort of Documenters who will help fill critical information gaps and strengthen civic participation across the region.
When you join our network, you’ll get:
Notifications about free trainings, workshops, and community events
Exclusive opportunities from City Bureau and local NMLNF partners
Access to paid assignments documenting local public meetings
The Documenters message board, where you can connect with Documenters across the country
A pathway to build your skills in journalism, civic engagement, and community accountability
