Supporting Student Journalists

UNM

Local News Fellowship Program

The New Mexico Local News Fund and the UNM Communication & Journalism Department launched a 9-month paid-fellowship program beginning June 2021 to March 2022. The program placed four graduates from NMSU and UNM's multimedia journalism programs into host newsrooms throughout New Mexico. The program is funded by a grant from the New Mexico Local News Fund and is being supervised by C&J Professor of Practice, Michael Marcotte.

This field-based fellowship model was designed to address three critical needs in New Mexico’s local news ecosystem:

  1. The need for an effective school-to-career pathway for diverse student journalists;

  2. The need for expanded journalistic capacity in local public-service newsrooms;

  3. The need for innovation, collaboration and community engagement in the state’s local news ecosystem.
