Supporting Student Journalists

Young Journalists Fellowship Program

The New Mexico Local News Fund and the UNM Communication & Journalism Department are launching an 8-month paid-fellowship program to run from January to August, 2020. The program will place three graduates of the school’s multimedia journalism program into host newsrooms in central New Mexico. The program is funded by a grant from the New Mexico Local News Fund and is being supervised by C&J Professor of Practice Michael Marcotte.

This pilot project seeks to demonstrate the viability of a field-based fellowship model designed to address three critical needs in New Mexico’s local news ecosystem:

  1. The need for an effective school-to-career pathway for diverse student journalists;

  2. The need for expanded journalistic capacity in local public-service newsrooms;

  3. The need for innovation, collaboration and community engagement in the state’s local news ecosystem.
